Xbox Says Fan Recompiled Ports Are Challenging Its 'Long-Held Assumptions'
In announcing Xbox Labs, CEO Asha Sharma cited games being 'rapidly decompiled and rebuilt' for new hardware as a sign of where gaming could go.

Xbox is paying attention to the wave of fan recompiled game ports. When Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced Xbox Labs, an experimental division, earlier this month, she referenced decompiled and recompiled games directly, Pure Xbox reports.
What Sharma said
As quoted by Pure Xbox, Sharma wrote: “In recent weeks, we’ve seen games rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed to support.” She mentioned Windows PC builds translated to Apple Silicon and games ported to the browser through WebAssembly and WebGPU.
She added that these experiments “challenge long-held assumptions about our industry: the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games,” and called giving old games new life “unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models.”
What it means so far
Xbox hasn’t announced official recomps. Pure Xbox points to Xbox’s backward compatibility for PC as the official route it’s taking now, with more games on the way. It also notes reports that heavy AI use is leaving many recomps buggy and crash-prone, and that recomps require a legally bought copy of the game.
We covered the fan recomp scene and RecompLauncher’s catalog here.
Our take
It’s notable for a platform holder to call this “good outcomes for players” rather than treat it purely as a threat. Whether Xbox Labs turns that into official ports is still an open question.
