GOG Galaxy Is Finally Coming to Linux, With a Reworked Client Due in 2027

GOG announced at its first GOG Showcase that the next generation of GOG Galaxy will come to Linux and that the Windows and Mac client is being reworked. A waitlist is open now

GOG says its GOG Galaxy launcher is coming to Linux. “GOG GALAXY is officially heading to Linux,” the company posted on X on November 5, during its first GOG Showcase.

What GOG has confirmed

  • Linux support: GOG says GOG Galaxy is “officially heading to Linux.” Its anniversary page describes “the next generation of our launcher: faster, fully customizable, with a modern interface, and finally on Linux!”
  • Windows and Mac too: GOG says it has “reworked the client on Windows and Mac to be simpler, run faster, and give you cleaner ways to view your library.”
  • Timing: GOG’s anniversary page lists it under “Coming In 2027.” No date, quarter or month is given.
  • Early access: that page has a waitlist sign-up, saying you can “join the waitlist and be among the first to try” the new GOG Galaxy and the new GOG Social community space. GOG hasn’t said when testing starts or how many people get in.
  • Galaxy stays optional: “our core promise stays untouched: GOG GALAXY is entirely optional. Your games are yours to download and keep through offline installers, exactly as they’ve always been.”

What GOG hasn’t said yet

GOG hasn’t said which Linux distributions will be supported, whether there will be a native build or a particular package format (such as Flatpak or AppImage), or anything about Steam Deck and SteamOS. It also hasn’t said what happens to the current GOG Galaxy 2.0 client when the new version arrives. Until GOG says more, treat all of these as open questions.

Background

GamingOnLinux (secondary) reported in July that GOG had hired a Linux specialist and was “actively exploring the best way to approach Linux support for GOG GALAXY,” according to joint CEO Krzysztof Papliński. Until now, GOG has offered Linux game downloads through its website but no Linux version of Galaxy.

Opinion: an official Linux client would give GOG its own launcher alongside Steam on Linux. That’s worth watching for SteamOS and handheld owners, but the details that matter (packaging, Steam Deck support, an actual date) are still unannounced.
