Steam Client Beta Fixes the Suspend Crash and Gives Game Invites Their Own Widget

Valve's October 26 Steam Client update for the Preview/Beta channel fixes a crash on resume, works around updates stalling at 99%, and cleans up chat in Big Picture Mode and SteamOS.

Valve pushed a new Steam Client update to the Preview/Beta channel on October 26, 2026 (posted at 6:51 PM CT). It isn’t on the stable channel, and Valve’s announcement doesn’t give it a version number. It was posted on the Steam Deck news hub, and most of the changes land in the Big Picture interface that SteamOS uses.

Two fixes worth the beta

  • Resume crash: Valve says it fixed a crash that happened when resuming from suspend.
  • Updates stuck at 99%: There’s a workaround for updates that occasionally hang at 99%. Valve calls it a workaround, not a root-cause fix.

Chat and invites in Big Picture

  • A dedicated invite widget: Game invites from friends now sit in their own widget above the text box in the chat tab. Before, you had to scroll back through chat history to find the invite. When a friend invites you from inside a group, it now shows in that group chat instead of only in your one-on-one tab.
  • Group chat layout: Valve improved the layout and fixed spots where gamepad navigation could get stuck.
  • Fewer pop-ups: Friend chat notifications now roll up together instead of firing a 2-second notification for every message.
  • Per-friend voice levels: These are now in the friend context menu in Big Picture Mode.
  • Focus styling: The chat tab has new styling so it’s clearer what’s selected.

Remote Play

Streaming now starts faster when you connect to a computer on your local network, according to Valve.

How to get it

On SteamOS, go to Settings > System and switch the Steam Client update channel to Beta. On desktop, use Steam’s settings under Interface. Beta builds can have new bugs, so switch back to stable if something breaks.

Note on the coverage

GamingOnLinux’s write-up also lists GameInput v4 support for Steam Input and a Steam Controller “…” button fix for Remote Play. Those items aren’t in the Steam Deck announcement linked above, so I haven’t included them here.
